Team NOHA falls to OMHA Black

KITCHENER – Spenzer Hazell broke the scoreless deadlock 15:41 into the first period, picking up his first of two goals for Team OMHA Black as they opened Day 2 at the 2017 OHL Gold Cup with a 7-1 win over Team NOHA.

Late in the first, NOHA goaltender Jake McGuire got a hold of an initial shot and rebound, but that rebound bounced right to Hazell who found the back of the net. It would be the only goal of the opening frame, with Team OMHA Black carrying the 1-0 lead into

the second.

Early in the middle period, Hayden Fowler and Blake Murray broke in on a two-on-one for OMHA Black. Fowler passed to Murray, who finished off the play with an easy flip into the open net. About eight minutes later, with NOHA on a powerplay, Emmett Sproule forced a turnover deep in the offensive zone. He then worked the give-and-go with Matthew Gordon to make it 3-0 for OMHA Black.

Team NOHA opened the third period with a goal on the first shift. Payton Vescio’s point shot was tipped in front by Mathew Hardwick to get NOHA on the board, 3-1. In the end, though, the third period would belong to OMHA Black.

Hazell scored his second of the game, along with goals from Mitchell Russell, Cameron Warren, and Hayden Fowler to end things 7-1 for Team OMHA Black.

Both teams have second games on Day 2. Team NOHA will face GTHL Red at 3:45 p.m. while OMHA Black will play Team Alliance at 6:00 p.m.
