Former NHL referee and current Vice President & Director of Officiating for the NHL Steve Walkom joins The NOHA’s Jacob Brown and Nipissing Lakers Men’s Hockey Coach Mike McParland from the 2026 NOHA Summer Camp at Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens.
Steve shares his journey from local rinks in Northern Ontario to the highest level of hockey officiating, including how he first became a referee, working his first NHL game, memorable moments from his career, and what it takes to officiate at the professional level.
He also explains how NHL officials train, stay in shape, develop through the league’s officiating system, and work toward maintaining one consistent standard from game to game.
