The Unsung Hero Behind the Bench

When we celebrate success within the Northern Ontario Hockey Association, we usually look to the standings, the championship banners, or the players moving on to the next level. But if you pull back the curtain on any successful minor hockey program, you’ll find one person who holds the entire operation together.
They are the first to arrive at the rink, the last to leave, and the quiet force keeping our young athletes safe, healthy, and ready to compete.
This year, the NOHA is thrilled to shine the spotlight on Andre Guenette of the North Bay Trappers, honouring him as our Trainer of the Year. To view the awards video from the AGM: Click Here
The Heartbeat of Northern Hockey
While the spotlight naturally shines on the players under the rink lights, a trainer operates in the high-stakes, fast-paced environment of the bench and the locker room. It takes a special kind of dedication to volunteer the countless hours required to run a bench, and Andre embodies the very best of it.
Being a trainer requires a unique blend of skills that goes far beyond standard hockey knowledge:
The Ultimate First Responder: From perfect tape jobs to making critical, safety-first decisions during a physical game, Andre’s expertise keeps our players safe on the ice.
The Locker Room Confidant: He offers a calming word to a frustrated player or a crucial boost of confidence to an athlete working their way back from an injury.
The Pillar of Dependability: Ensuring the bench is primed, safety protocols are strictly followed, and the team is physically prepared to face any opponent, road trip after road trip.
What Makes Andre Our Unsung Hero?
The true value of a trainer like Andre Guenette isn't just measured in ice packs, medical kits, and skate towels; it’s measured in trust.
Players, parents, and coaches across the Trappers organization know that when an athlete is hurting or facing adversity, Andre is their safe harbour. He doesn't do it for the headlines, the trophies, or the applause. He does it because he cares deeply about the well-being, development, and safety of every single player wearing the jersey.
Why Andre Represents the Best of the NOHA:
The Dedicated Hours: Giving up weekends, early mornings, and late nights to ensure the team is fully supported.
Safety First: Championing the NOHA’s commitment to player safety and setting a gold standard for trainers across the association.
Unwavering Support: Being a steady, positive presence from the most stressful seat in the rink—the bench.
Thank You, Andre! In the words of the bench staff, "It was only a matter of time before something like this was bestowed on him"
On behalf of the entire Northern Ontario Hockey Association, we want to congratulate Andre Guenette on this well-deserved honour. Thank you for the bumps you’ve treated, the safety standards you've upheld, and the endless dedication you’ve poured into hockey.
The players might score the goals, but trainers like you keep the game moving forward.
