NOHA Most Improved Official Award - Nicholas Folz

Every year, the NOHA recognizes the many Officials and Volunteers who contribute to the game in Northern Ontario. Traditionally, these individuals are recognized at the NOHA Annual General Meeting, however due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be acknowledging all award winners via the NOHA website and our various social media platforms from April 14 to April 23, 2020.

Most Improved Official – Nicholas Folz (Sault Ste. Marie)

Fourth-year official Nicholas Folz from Sault Ste. Marie has progressed this year to lining Major Bantam AAA and refereeing two-official in Midget B. Nicholas will skate any level assigned to him and is always asking for feedback. He will text or call about a situation after a game to discuss how it was handled and what, if anything, could have been done differently. He is always available and will go to a game last-minute. Nicholas is getting more comfortable and confident, and it shows. Nicholas also talks to younger officials and gives them advice when skating with them; Nicholas has shown impressive improvement this year. Congratulations to Nicholas Folz on being named the 2019-2020 Most Improved Official.

About the Most Improved Official Award

The official who has shown the most improvement within their officiating calibre of hockey. This is not necessarily your best official but the one who has progressed the most through their attendance at clinics/seminars and their on-ice efforts.

The following are additional guidelines for consideration when nominating an Official

  • Receptive to feedback during supervisions; applies the suggestions in future games

  • Someone who has shown an interest and dedication to officiating in your District

  • An Official who has shown an interest in improving at their craft by asking for feedback

  • Has progressed during the season to be able to officiate higher levels of hockey (i.e. started the season officiating Novice games, is now doing Peewee and Bantam)
