  • 2017 Advanced Skills Analysis Coaching Seminar

    The NOHA will be hosting the fourth annual Advanced Skills Analysis Coaching Seminar at the 2017 NOHA Development Weekend occurring from August 10 to 13, 2017 in Sudbury. The Advanced Skills Analysis Coaching Seminar consists of Instructional Stream Clinics in Skating, Skills, Developing Defencemen, and Goaltending. There will be a heavy emphasis on the use of video to breakdown and teach skills. All seminars will be instructed by knowledgeable hockey personnel from the American Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, and Hockey Canada. Coaches who attend the Seminar will have the opportunity to work with players attending the OHF/OHL Under-15 Camp in both practices and games. The OHF/OHL Under-15 Camp is a high performance camp that brings together all of the top OHL draft eligible players from across the NOHA. The cost to attend the Seminar $350.00 ($309.74 + HST). This includes the registration fee for the Seminar, three (3) nights accommodations at Laurentian University Residence, all meals and snacks throughout the Seminar, facilitator fees, course materials, and a souvenir. For the second time, we will be allowing coaches to attend the Advance Skills Coaching Seminar without staying on Laurentian Residence. The cost to attend will be $226.00 ($200.00 + HST).   • 2017 OHF Bursary Application

    The Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) Bursary Program was introduced in 1997 to recognize and reward dedication in education and hockey. The program provides financial assistance to registered OHF participants to offset the cost of post-secondary education. In the past 20 years, the OHF has distributed more than $390,000 to over 360 post-secondary students. Each year, the OHF awards bursaries to outstanding young people who display an incredible amount of commitment both at the arena and in the classroom.   • Team NOHA Staff Announced

    Northern Ontario Hockey Association and Great North Midget League Announce Staff for Team NOHA North Bay – February 2, 2017 – The Northern Ontario Hockey Association (NOHA) and the Great North Midget League (GNML) are proud to announce their Director of Operations, Coaches, and Trainers for Team NOHA at the 2017 OHL Cup and the 2017 OHL Gold Cup. The Director of Operations for Team NOHA is Stew Gordon. Over his thirty years involved in Minor Hockey, Stew has been involved in just about every capacity. He started out as a member of the Onaping Falls Junior ‘A’ team in 1980, while coaching at every level from Novice to Juvenile since then. For more than ten years, he coached the Rayside Balfour Sabrecats Midget AAA team, and was a founding member of the Nickel City Sons AAA Program. Since that time, Stew was General Manager of the Nickel City Sons Midget AAA Team. He currently is the Deputy Commissioner of the GNML. The Head Coach of Team NOHA is Kevin Panco. Kevin is currently the Head Coach of the Soo Greyhounds (Midget AAA), a role he has held for two seasons. He is a High Performance 1 “Certified” coach and has a wealth of experience at all levels of hockey. Kevin prides himself on being a skills first coach. This will be Kevin’s first season with Team NOHA. The Assistant Coaches of Team NOHA are Stephen Surcon and Sheldon Reasbeck. Stephen is currently the Head Coach of the Timmins Majors (Midget AAA) and Timmins North Stars (Peewee AA). Stephen is a High Performance 1 “Certified” coach. He is an NOHA NCCP Learning Facilitator, delivering the Development 1, Coach Level, Intro to Coach, and Checking Clinics in the Timmins area. This will be Stephen’s first season with Team NOHA. Sheldon was an Assistant Coach with the Kapuskasing Flyers (Midget AAA) in the 2015-16 season. Sheldon is a Development 1 “Certified” Coach. He is the President of PowerPlay Hockey, a company dedicated to skill and skating development in Northern Ontario. This will be Sheldon’s second season with Team NOHA. The Trainers of Team NOHA are Lisa Parise and Chris Seguin. Lisa is currently a Trainer with the Rayside Balfour Canadians of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL). She is a registered nurse and an HTCP Level III Trainer. She has volunteered as a Team Trainer at the last three NOHA Development Weekends. She has also been named to Team NOJHL the past three seasons. This will be Lisa’s first season with Team NOHA. Chris Seguin is an HTCP Level III Trainer. He has volunteered as a coach and trainer He has volunteered as a Team Trainer at the 2016 NOHA Development Weekend. This will be Chris’ first season with Team NOHA. The 2017 OHL Cup is March 15 to 20, 2017 in Mississauga, while the 2017 OHL Gold Cup is May 3 to 7, 2017 in Kitchener. Team NOHA will be made up of 2001-born players from across the NOHA.   • High Performance 1 Clinics

    The Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) will be hosting another two High Performance 1 (HP1) Coaches Clinics this summer, to help meet the requirements of Hockey Canada HP1 Policy. Over the last three years, the OHF has trained close to seven hundred coaches at ten clinics. The first stage of the HP1 program is attending the in class seminar This year, the OHF will host clinics in Toronto and Barrie, over two weekends in June (June 9‐11; June 17‐18) at Humber College in Toronto and July 6‐9th at Georgian College in Barrie. After the in‐class portion of the program, coaches will complete a written assignment and receive feedback from a mentor. The final step is a practice and game assessment completed by an OHF trained evaluator. Applications for the HP1 program are available on the OHF website by clicking on the following link http://www.ohf.on.ca/view/ohfmainsite/coaches‐1/high‐performance‐1 Acceptance is based on the level of hockey being coached next season. Priority will be given to those coaches who will require the certification for the 2017‐18 season. The total registration fee for the clinic is $1000+tax and includes lunches/snacks, all seminar materials, written assignment evaluation, mentoring and field evaluation. Transportation, dinners and accommodation are the responsibility of the participant.

  • 2017 Under-15 Program of Excellence Camp Announcement

    The NOHA, OHF and OHL have announced the details of the 2017 OHF/OHL Under-15 Program of Excellence as part of the 2017 NOHA Development Weekend. This program is the only Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) and Ontario Hockey League (OHL) combined sanctioned event for the 2002 age group within the NOHA. The program will be held over a three-day weekend – August 11-13, 2017 in Sudbury, ON. Players will participate in intense, high performance on and off ice sessions and seminars. On-ice sessions will be ran by OHL personnel and will include, two practices (Individual Skills and Team Tactics), On-Ice Testing and three games. Off-ice sessions include seminars on Mental Health, Sports Psychology, Nutrition and Fitness. The program is open to all male players who were born in 2002 and are registered within the NOHA. The online application process is now open and will run until March 31, 2017. A non-refundable $100.00 deposit is required upon registration. A website link will be provided at a later time, to complete the remainder of the payment process. Team NOHA Team NOHA will be made up of OHL Draft-eligible players that are permanent residents in Northern Ontario. Team NOHA will compete in different events during the 2017-18 hockey season, including the 2018 OHL Cup and the 2018 OHL Gold Cup. Players who wish to be considered for Team NOHA are encouraged to register and attend the Development Weekend. If you are unable to attend the NOHA Development Weekend and wish to be considered for Team NOHA you may apply to participate in one of the four other OHF/OHL Under-15 Program of Excellence locations: Kitchener, Toronto, Windsor, and Oshawa.     LET'S CELEBRATE HOCKEY In support of ParticipACTION 150, Hockey Canada is encouraging all Canadians to get out and enjoy Canada’s national winter sport. All Canadians are invited to celebrate hockey in all its forms on Jan. 28 and post their photos on social media; whether it’s pond hockey, sledge hockey, street hockey, mini-stick hockey or floorball – show Canada through social media by using the following #150PlayList and #HockeyCanada. Be active and play hockey! "BRING A FRIEND" TO THE RINK From Jan. 23-29, minor hockey associations from coast to coast to coast are encouraged to have Initiation, Novice and Atom players “bring a friend” to the rink and give the opportunity for friends not in the game to enjoy a fun practice session with their peers. Confirmed activities will be insured by Hockey Canada, with the following equipment mandatory: helmet and full-face mask, neck guard, gloves and skates. Visit Hockey Canada for more information.

  • New Head Contact Rule

    Beginning the 2011/2012 season, Hockey Canada introduced a new rule for head contact; see Hockey Canada rule 6.5 for further information. These rules were implemented to help curb hits to the head, which are the leading cause of concussions. While the NOHA Board does feel that these rules have helped, they also feel that more can be done to further send a message that contact to the head area will not be tolerated.   • Free Developing Skilled Defensemen Clinic in Haileybury on January 29, 2017

    The NOHA is offering a free Developing Skills Defensemen Level 1 Clinic on January 29, 2017 at the Haileybury Arena. The Clinic runs from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. The clinic is 3 hours in length spread out over one day. Throughout the day, coaches will review interactive Clinic Modules on the following topics: Skating: Defensemen specific Breakouts basics: Individual defenseman skills Regroup: Basic skills Neutral zone play Defensive zone: 1-1 play Shooting: Individual skills All participants that are attending this Developing Skilled Defensemen Level 1 Clinic will receive five (5) points towards their Development 1/High Performance 1 Re-Certification.   • Congrats to Blake Speers of Team Canada

    The Northern Ontario Hockey Association would like to congratulate Sault Ste. Marie native Blake Speers on being named to Team Canada’s World Juniors Under-20 team! Blake, who plays for the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds and is a prospect of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils (drafted at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in the 3rd Round, #67 overall), played his entire minor hockey career in Sault Ste. Marie with the Soo Peewee Hockey Association and the Sault Major Hockey Association. In 61 games played with Soo Thunder Minor Midget AA in 2012-2013, he posted 43 goals and 70 assists for 113 points. He also was a member of Team NOHA and in 9 games played at the 2013 OHL Cup and 2013 OHL Gold Cup he produced a stat line of 4 goals and 6 assists for 10 points. Current NHLers/NOHA alumni who have competed at the World Junior Hockey Championship include Brendan Perlini (2016 WJHC, Arizona Coyotes), Marcus Foligno (2011 WJHC, Buffalo Sabres), Claude Giroux (2008 WJHC, Philadelphia Flyers), and Derek MacKenzie (2001 WJHC, Florida Panthers). We wish Blake the very best luck at the tournament as Team Canada strives for Gold on home ice.
