  • Team NOHA falls to GTHL Blue

KITCHENER – Ethan Keppen scored the game winner midway through the first period and assisted on an insurance goal late in the third, to lead Team GTHL Blue past Team NOHA 6-1, in the first consolation semifinal at the 2017 OHL Gold Cup. The first two goals from GTHL Blue developed much the same way, coming off offensive zone pressure and quick passing to open up lanes. Phil Tomasino, Nicolas Porco, and Daniel D’Amico combined on the first goal of the game 3:22 into the opening frame, with D’Amico’s first of the OHL Gold Cup. Just over four minutes later, Robert Calisti, Tomasino, and Keppen worked the puck tic-tac-toe around the NOHA zone to put GTHL Blue ahead 2-0. Tomasino would finish off the period with his third point of the game and fourth goal of the tournament, picking up a bouncing puck in the neutral zone and heading in on NOHA goaltender Jake McGuire on a short two-on-one. Tomasino decided to hold onto the puck and beat McGuide to send GTHL Blue to the dressing room with a 3-0 lead. There was no scoring in the second, though Landon Thomson had a chance to get NOHA on the board after calling for, and getting, a breakaway pass. But GTHL Blue goaltender Matt Keeley got a glove on it, maintaining the 3-0 lead. Tomasino scored his second of the game 6:46 into the third period, before Tristian Cicchello made it 4-1, picking up a deflected shot to beat Keeley low. Team GTHL would add another two goals before the end of the third, including another from Tomasino for his second hat trick of the OHL Gold Cup, for a 6-1 win. Both Team NOHA and GTHL Blue will wait to find out which teams they will face on Sunday, with puck drop for both games set for 8:00 a.m. at the Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener. • Team NOHA Drops Third Straight

KITCHENER – Graeme Clarke’s three-point performance in Team GTHL Red’s 7-3 win over Team NOHA at the 2017 OHL Gold Cup will best be remembered his second goal of the afternoon. With GTHL Red ahead 5-2 and on a powerplay, Clarke picked up a pass and set up behind the NOHA net. In a flash, he flipped the puck up onto his stick and reached around the post, lacrosse style. “I’ve done it a few times this year, it’s a fun one it just makes the game more fun and doing stuff like that is obviously pretty cool, so I like doing it,” Clarke says of his memorable goal. It was the NOHA that opened the scoring in the first, working low in the GTHL Red zone on the powerplay. Kobe Seguin found a lane and sent the pass to Camaryn Baber to put NOHA ahead 1-0. “Just a fluky first goal, one of our defences threw it in front of the net and I just tapped it in,” Baber says of his first of two points on the night. GTHL Red answered back though, just 47 seconds later. With his team set up in the NOHA zone, Clarke used the screen to beat goaltender Joel Rainville for a 1-1 tie, which would hold throughout the rest of the first. In the second, Kyle Harris and Lucas Rowe put up two more goals for Team GTHL Red for a 3-1 lead going into the third. Anthony Aguanno and Cole MacKay traded goals for GTHL Red and NOHA early in the third. Ty Jackson added another for GTHL Red for a 5-2 lead, when Clarke buried his second of the night on the lacrosse-style play. Louka Henault and Jacob Peterson-Galema also scored to finish the game at 7-3. With the win, Team GTHL Red secures first place in Group B and will play the still-to-be determined second seed from Group A, Saturday at 5:15 p.m. Group A will be decided in the final game of Day 2, when Team HEO and Team OMHA White play at 8:15 p.m. Follow along with all the OHL Gold Cup action on Twitter @OHLGoldCup Follow along with Team NOHA on Twitter @NOHAHockey. • Team NOHA falls to OMHA Black

KITCHENER – Spenzer Hazell broke the scoreless deadlock 15:41 into the first period, picking up his first of two goals for Team OMHA Black as they opened Day 2 at the 2017 OHL Gold Cup with a 7-1 win over Team NOHA. Late in the first, NOHA goaltender Jake McGuire got a hold of an initial shot and rebound, but that rebound bounced right to Hazell who found the back of the net. It would be the only goal of the opening frame, with Team OMHA Black carrying the 1-0 lead into the second. Early in the middle period, Hayden Fowler and Blake Murray broke in on a two-on-one for OMHA Black. Fowler passed to Murray, who finished off the play with an easy flip into the open net. About eight minutes later, with NOHA on a powerplay, Emmett Sproule forced a turnover deep in the offensive zone. He then worked the give-and-go with Matthew Gordon to make it 3-0 for OMHA Black. Team NOHA opened the third period with a goal on the first shift. Payton Vescio’s point shot was tipped in front by Mathew Hardwick to get NOHA on the board, 3-1. In the end, though, the third period would belong to OMHA Black. Hazell scored his second of the game, along with goals from Mitchell Russell, Cameron Warren, and Hayden Fowler to end things 7-1 for Team OMHA Black. Both teams have second games on Day 2. Team NOHA will face GTHL Red at 3:45 p.m. while OMHA Black will play Team Alliance at 6:00 p.m. Follow along with all the OHL Gold Cup action on Twitter @OHLGoldCup Follow along with Team NOHA on Twitter @NOHAHockey. • Team NOHA Drops OHL Gold Cup Opener

KITCHENER – Justin McCombs scored once in the first and added two more in the third, to help Team Alliance to a 6-0 win over Team NOHA in the third game of the OHL Gold Cup. The scoring started with a tap-in for McCombs, who was sitting at the edge of Joel Rainville’s crease. The Team NOHA goaltender made the initial save off the point shot and rebound, but couldn’t get across to stop McCombs. “We had been working hard throughout the game putting pressure on them and the pressure paid off, just scramble in front of the net and I was able to find the rebound and put it in,” McCombs said of his first goal of the game. Cole Schwindt added a goal in the second, before McCombs would be back at it again with another tip, this one beating Rainville five-hole. Schwindt then added his second of the game before a powerplay would lead to McCombs’ final goal of the game. On the Team Alliance man-advantage, Keean Washkurak carried the puck through the slot, but dropped it back to McCombs who had a wide-open net to finish the play. McCombs’ third of the game made it 5-0 in favour of Team Alliance. Ryan Suzuki finished off the scoring for Team Alliance, driving to the net from a face-off, stick handling past Rainville, then sliding it in for a 6-0 win. “[We have to] forget about the game and just focus on the next one, that’s all we can do really,” Rainville said. Team Alliance will finish off Day 1 against Team GTHL Red. While Team NOHA starts Day 2 against Team OMHA Black. Follow along with all the OHL Gold Cup action on Twitter @OHLGoldCup.
